The Pleasure Prom

The photographic work by Mark Reeves explores the new promenade developments in Blackpool between South Beach and North Pier, focusing on the public spaces and architecture.

My accompanying soundscape includes layers of ambient sound from along the promenade and interviews that reference a seaside holiday from the past.

The project explores the area’s regeneration and issues that have intrigued the authors over many years: the changing nature of British seaside holidays, the juxtaposition of carnival and calm, Blackpool as a seaside town in constant flux, and the architecture of pleasure.

Viewers could interpret this in a number of ways – perhaps as a critique of recent developments, perhaps as a nostalgic evocation, perhaps as a starting point to discuss the different experiences of residents and visitors.
