I came across these photographs at a local auction house and was fascinated by both the images and the commentary on the reverse.

Taken in India in the early part of the 20th century, they evidence the colonial nature of British rule.

They are in turn patronising and mocking, constantly pointing to the ‘otherness’ of their subjects.
